Checkpoints

This article will show you how to configure checkpoints for levels and will give you a better insight into how they are hardcoded into the early years and steps assessment platforms.

Checkpoints are collection periods to record assessment data, there are maximum of 7 a year:

Checkpoint Term Date
Baseline Start of Year 01/09/2018 - 14/09/2018
Checkpoint 1 Autumn 1 15/09/2018 - 31/10/2018
Checkpoint 2 Autumn 2 01/11/2018 - 31/12/2018
Checkpoint 3 Spring 1 01/01/2019 - 28/02/2019
Checkpoint 4 Spring 2 01/03/2019 - 30/04/2019
Checkpoint 5  Summer 1 01/05/2019 - 30/06/2019
Checkpoint 6 Summer 2 01/07/2019 - 31/08/2019

Checkpoints for Early Years

Checkpoints for the early years foundation stage are hardcoded into the ScholarPack software so if you are using this assessment platform you will not need to set up checkpoints.

If you are using the early years markbook you may see that you are unable to change the checkpoint you want to enter data for, this is because the system by default locks the checkpoint to the term you are in. If you want or need to flexibility to enter data in retrospectively you can change the systems setting by going to Admin > Config > New Assessment Config

You will see a column called Lock Checkpoints EYFS, you will need to change this to No and update through the Edit function.

Checkpoints for Steps and Statements

Checkpoints for Steps are also hardcoded into the ScholarPack software, if you are using this assessment platform you will not need to set up any checkpoints.

If you are using the summative markbook you may see that you are unable to change the checkpoint you want to enter data for, this is because the system by default locks the checkpoint to the term you are in. If you want or need to flexibility to enter data in retrospectively you can change the systems setting by going to Admin > Config > New Assessment Config.

You will see a column called Lock Checkpoints KS1+KS2, you will need to submit this to No and update through the Edit function.

Checkpoints for Levels

Checkpoints for levels are not hardcoded into the software so you will need to create them within ScholarPack. This can be done through Workspace > SMT Assessments.

Workspace > SMT Assessments > Checkpoints.

Click on the checkpoint icon to proceed to the next page. You will be presented with the following image below.  Click 'Add New' to insert a new checkpoint.

You will be required to input 4 fields types:

  • Curriculum year to which the CP applies.
  • Checkpoint Number
  • Collection date (this is the date that the checkpoint is opened)
  • Mark type.  You can select 'Fine Grained' NC levels which allows you to mark down to one points APS progress.

The on entry baseline can be selected from the checkpoint drop down box. Please ensure you apply the collection date prior to any other checkpoints.

Please note: you can only use 1 mark type per year group for the whole academic year.

Repeat this process until you have all of your checkpoints set up for each academic year.

Checkpoints will be open within the markbook for 4 weeks from the collection date that you have specified within the set up.
