Child in Need (CIN) Status

How to record a student as a Child in Need (CIN)?

On the student profile's Extended Tab, under Support Information, there is a field for 'Is [student] on a child in need plan?'.

By default this is set to No for all students, but it can be set to Yes to identify these students.

What criteria identifies a Child in Need?

Under Section 17 (10) of the Children Act 1989, a child is a Child in Need if:

  • He/she is unlikely to achieve or maintain, or have the opportunity of achieving or maintaining, a reasonable standard of health or development without the provision for him/her of services by a local authority;
  • His/her health or development is likely to be significantly impaired, or further impaired, without the provision for him/her of such services; or
  • He/she is disabled.

By recording that a student is a Child in Need, schools will be able to identify and track this group of students.
